Please find attached the notice for the DUC AGM that will be held on MONDAY 2nd AUGUST 2010 AT 19H00 SHARP AT THE DUC CLUBHOUSE, VETCH’S PIER, DURBAN. All members are encouraged to attend.

You are gently reminded that membership fees for 2010/11 are due by the 2nd of August 2010. After that date, the 2009/10 orange colour DUC membership cards will no longer be valid.

SONY WINTER PHOTOGRAHIC SHOOTOUT – JULY 21ST – 25TH

DUC will be hosting this event over the next week and for more information on the vent check out the following links:

You can still enter the competition by registering on Wednesday 21st July at DUC. The program of the competition is as follows:

  1. 21 July 18:30 – 21:00 registration at DUC
  2.  
  3. 22 & 23 July whole day shooting (pictures!)
  4.  
  5. 24 July 09:00 – 11:00  submission of entries
  6.  
  7. 24 July 11:30 – 16:00 judging of entries
  8.  
  9. 25 July (casual diving, aquarium visit's, etc.)

MARINE ENVIRONMENT EDUCATIONAL COURSE – JULY 29TH – AUG 26TH

Most DUC members join DUC to be close to the sea and have a strong affinity for the Ocean whether they are divers or not. If you would like to learn more about the Marine Environment, then this is the course for you – you don’t have to be a diver or skipper etc, - you just have to have an interest and thirst for knowledge which is expertly provided bythe uShaka Marine World Educational staff. The course program is as follows:

29th July

Oceanography      plus back of house tour of Seaworld’s life support systems

Thursday

5th August

Biodiversity, threats and what we can do      East vs West coast

Thursday

12th August

Basic Invertebrate and Vertebrate Classification

Thursday

19th August

Common Fish Families   - basic ID and their status in our oceans, followed by half hour guiding in aquarium

Thursday

26th August

Ecosystems,   followed by a full night guiding through the aquarium

Time   6 to 8.30 pm    Tea / coffee and biscuits will be available on arrival

Cost    R550 for the whole course.  This includes a binder and course notes, a wonderful coast care CD crammed with info and a certificate upon completion of the course.

The 5 evenings cover 12 ½ hours of expert tuition, an exclusive back of house tour, some hands on fun in the classroom, a peep through the microscope in the wet lab and night guidings through the aquarium.    For bookings and payments details please contact Eltina on eltinastenhouse@mweb.co.za or 083 270 1029

Request for Curtains

“One day son, this will be all yours!”  “ Wot! The curtains?!”

  1. We were looking at upgrading the committee meeting / training room upstairs and were hoping to put some curtains in. We have volunteers to do the hanging / rails but we need the curtains made up and we were hoping that there is a member that can assist with making up the curtains. As always, the club welcomes donations, but in this instance the club is willing to assist in purchasing the material. The dimensions are:

DUC FUND RAISER

The DUC Fund raising sub-commitee headed by Melanie and Nikky are planning a fund raising event for October 2010 which hopefully will include events like a R10 000 raffle draw, fashion show and Beer fest. If anyone is interested is assisting in any way , please contact Nikky Felgen on nikky@cybersmart.co.za or 0722231729. In the meantime, to get a taste of what the fashion show will consist of, check out Top Billing on the 29th of July when Dax, the designer of the costumes at the fashion show will be featured.
