You’re your own podcaster, ready to take on the world however you see fit. To hell with the old way—you’re going to reinvent the wheel and roll, baby! In a lot of ways, before you can break the rules, you have to make the rules. We strongly suggest you create a format for your show, which will be the wheel on which you ride. People in the radio industry actually use the analogy of a wheel or a clock to determine when to do things, what to play when, and so on, as shown in Figure 4-1. At the top of the hour (wheel), they play an upbeat new hit, then they play another song, and then at quarter past the hour they go to a commercial break.

Well, at least go to podcasters you like. Who better to steer you toward material that you might like than the very podcasters you already enjoy? These may be out-and-out recommendations, they may be mentions, or they may just be promos played on the show. Every podcaster who has been around for any length of time has developed their own list of favorite podcasts. Podcasters love to talk about other podcasts almost as much as they like to talk about themselves, so you’ll never have to wait long to get an opinion on who’s doing what.

Are they tricky to set up? Not really. Do we promise to never call them “aggregators” again? You betcha. Lots of choices . . You can choose from plenty of podcatchers, regardless of what platform you’re using and what budget you’re working with. They all serve the same basic function: looking for and downloading new podcasts. How they handle finding, downloading, and saving the shows to your hard drive varies slightly from one to another, but the examples we give will most likely hold true for all the others.
