Demoticism and perfectionism have molded and enriched billions of lives through history. The tension between them has propelled key debates in every culture. Each of these ethoses has two main pillars, around which all parts of its worldview cluster. For demots, they are (1) embeddedness in a community and a set of roles and duties, and (2) faith in the basic homogeneity of human nature. For perfectionists, they are (1) transcendence of a minority of people based on their special qualities or insights, and (2) some detachment from social roles and boundaries.
This involves being able to recognize oneself in other, equally committed virtuocrats. The medieval world around the Ikhwān, for example, was torn along sectarian lines. 49 Prophecy and philosophy might differ on an abstract level—one resting on revelation, the other on reason—but not in the self-understanding of people carrying out either mission.
