Two investigations of one specific component of desensitization, brief relaxation training, have found somewhat different results. Grossberg (1965) found no significant physiological changes accompanying the training of student volunteers in muscular relaxation, when compared with an untrained control group, although a more recent study by Paul (1969a) using similar subject groups found significant heart-rate and muscle-tension decreases. At the Institute of Psychiatry we have also found decreases in physiological activity during relaxation, although this study used anxious patients instead of students, and required an increased number of training sessions (Mathews and Gelder, 1969).

Control patient: This patient presented an anomaly because he behaved in the opposite way to that expected from opérant conditioning principles. Under the condition of 'reinforcement-forsilence' he made considerable improvement, and more so than the experimental patient who was reinforced for speech. He learned to imitate the experimenters' speech despite being ignored, which was, for him, aversive. The mean within-session scores do not, however, reveal any upward trend (block i, 72-4 per cent; block 2, 67-8 per cent; block 3, 69-2 per cent).
