Smidt Thiessen: Results from breed comparisons have shown that the greatest variation in production traits, particularly food efficiency, is observed when comparisons are made at the same bodyweight. In view of the influence of differences in mature size, I would like to see comparisons made at the same age, and also by regression analysis to the same degree of fatness. Langholz: Results from the Polish trial have been obtained on heavy concentrate diets, and hence it is not surprising that they largely reflect differences in the mature size of the Friesian strains.
The latter may be expected if there was upgrading in the source populations. "\~ere Flanagan: Yes, German sires were compared in 1971 and Canadian sires compared in 1975; so this could lead to small biases. There is an error in my paper in relation to the performance of New Zealand bulls in the Polish trial.
