Typically, all elements surrounding a building play a secondary role in the composition of an architectural photograph, resulting in an image with an unequivocal message (fig. 68). The significance of each individual building in images that contain more than one major structure can vary. Sometimes, a single building will dominate due to its size or central position, while at other times, the arrangement of multiple structures can give each a similar weight within the overall composition (fig. 69).
Especially when shooting for documentary purposes, architectural photographers need to be sure that the entire subject is captured in sharp detail. For this reason, we often shoot with the lens stopped right down—a technique that also reduces vignetting effects, chromatic aberration (color fringing), and softness at the edges of the frame. Fringing and some softness are almost impossible to completely avoid, even at very small apertures. While chromatic aberration can be effectively counteracted using software tools, the edges of photos often remain less sharp than the center, especially if they were shot using cheap or mid-range lenses.
A panning clamp on top of the tripod head can be particularly helpful for horizontal panning. If your camera is not level but is instead tilted slightly up or down, a panning base, as you often see with ball mounts, makes panning the camera sideways easier (in which case the tripod should be positioned as straight as possible). 38 Camera Technology If you don’t have a remote release on hand, you can also use your camera’s selftimer function to release the shutter without touching the camera. The disadvantage of this approach is that you cannot precisely determine when the shutter fires.
