Play around with exaggerating one or both parts. If your addict self says it won’t listen to the recovery self, then exaggerate its position. Say something like, “I will never listen to what you or what anyone else says about me. ” How does the recovery self respond to the addict self when it becomes more outrageous?

So you can see the value of unpacking what my addict self was telling me. At the time I had no clue, but today I know this to be true: my addict self has promoted my awareness of many issues in my life that required therapeutic attention. When I have encouraged my clients to dialogue with this part of themselves, they’ve also discovered some very important things that were missing in their lives. Let’s look at a few of them.
